Twist endings are hard to rate because they either completely destroy a movie by trying to be too complicated and thought provoking (S. Darko/The Number 23), or they sucker punch you out of nowhere and leave you breathless (The Mist/Oldboy/Memento). Let’s be honest, some people are just too dumb to get certain twist endings, or just plum hate surprises, so everyone is going to have their own opinion on this one. But for me, nothing beats:
The Usual Suspects
Again, this is another one of those picks that’s repeated by most, but it has to be because Singer’s execution is flawless. Of course, it also wouldn’t have been achieved without the fantastic acting by cast members such as Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, Benicio Del Toro, Stephen Baldwin, Kevin Pollak, Chazz Palminteri, and the late Pete Postlethwaite. I won’t spoil the ending if you haven’t seen it (don’t worry), but just trust me when I say it’s worth the watch. Give this a rent if you’re in the mood for a killer crime thriller, and have someone missed this.
Shout Out: The Mist (2007) Director: Frank Darabont
This is one of the darkest and most chilling endings I have ever witnessed. It brings bleak and disheartening to a whole new level. Definitely a very hard decision between this and The Usual Suspects.
So go ahead, who wants to argue with me The Sixth Sense is the greatest twist ending in history? There’s got to be someone out there. Or just tell me your favorite, either one.
